A groundbreaking product designed to contain and extinguish lithium-ion battery fires has claimed Electrical Safety First's prestigious Safety Innovation Award for 2025, as incidents involving battery fires continue to rise across the UK.
The E:BAG, created by Flair Solutions, secured the much-coveted award which celebrates innovations that protect consumers from electrical hazards. The accolade, sponsored by UL Standards & Engagement, recognises launched products, prototypes and safety initiatives including community projects.
The winning product uses advanced fire-resistant materials and nano-technology to safely isolate and suppress battery fires, automatically activating when temperatures reach 140 degrees Celsius. Originally developed for aircraft safety, the E:BAG has been adapted for use with e-bike and e-scooter batteries – addressing a growing safety concern.
Judges particularly commended the product's scalability, with the bag available in three sizes: 15 litres for smaller devices such as phones and e-cigarettes, 30 litres for tablets, and 45 litres for larger items like e-bike batteries.
Terry Alberti, Business Director of Flair Solutions, said: "It's a fantastic achievement to be recognised by a well-established organisation like Electrical Safety First. We set Flair up with the ambition to both prevent and protect people and assets from unsafe environments, like thermal runaway."
Luke Osborne, Technical Director of Electrical Safety First, said: "Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are a serious challenge, which the charity continues to tackle through our research and campaigns. Technological innovations are one way in which the industry can contribute towards keeping consumers safe."
The judging panel also praised the E:BAG's carbon filtration and cooling technology, as well as its reusability.
Flair Solutions presented the E:BAG at the 2025 Electrical Product Safety Conference on Thursday 16 October to an audience of more than 290 manufacturers, retailers, safety advocates, and government and enforcement bodies.
The Highly Commended entry for 2025 went to Flosverse Techsphere for its electrical safety virtual reality app, which uses immersive gameplay to educate teenagers about electrical safety in the home.
