Homeowners are being urged to stop putting off appliance maintenance and to register their products with manufacturers during Register My Appliance Week, which runs from 19th to 23rd January 2026.
A new survey conducted by OnePoll for the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) has revealed the top household jobs that homeowners delay, with noisy or vibrating washing machines, overflowing gutters and dripping taps heading the list. Slow-draining sinks or showers, freezers constantly icing up and coffee machines and kettles needing descaling also featured prominently.
Stefan Hay, CEO of AMDEA, said acting early is the simplest way to avoid unnecessary expense and inconvenience later down the line. He added that prioritising registration means homeowners can be contacted immediately if a free safety repair is needed on their particular model, before any real issue occurs.
The survey found that when it comes to registering large appliances with the manufacturer, one in five homeowners couldn't remember if they had registered their products and less than half had registered all their major white goods. Millennials claimed the highest percentage who have yet to register all their appliances at 63 per cent.
Nearly a quarter of homeowners admitted they might not immediately hear about a recall on an appliance they own, leaving unregistered products extremely hard to trace if a safety repair is ever needed.
While 94 per cent of homeowners feel it's important to keep large appliances in good condition, 28 per cent admitted they rarely check them for potential problems. The top excuses for putting off jobs include the issue not feeling urgent, lack of time and the anticipated cost of repairs.
Three in 10 homeowners admit this delay has ended up costing them more in the long run, with problems on average costing £305 due to delayed response.
Mr Hay said ignoring small maintenance issues can lead to bigger repairs in the future, as they rarely stay small for long. Tackling them early saves time, money and stress, plus it keeps homes running smoothly.
Register My Appliance Week will receive support from more than 150 Fire and Rescue Services nationwide, the Government and safety and consumer groups. Homeowners can register their appliances at registermyappliance.org.uk
