Domestic appliances company Haier UK has equipped a pioneering zero-energy home with its latest energy-efficient appliances in an effort to create a sustainable, low-cost living environment.
The project, developed in Sheffield by Haier UK in partnership with house building experts Strata, is designed to reduce both environmental impact and household costs, with Haier's energy-saving appliances helping to reduce power needs of the Close to Zero Energy Home. As part of the project with Strata, Haier UK has provided a full suite of appliances, including an X Series 11 washer and heat pump dryer, I Pro Shine Series 7 dishwasher, Series 6 oven, hob and hood, and small kitchen appliances from the Haier I Master Series 5 range.
The energy-efficient devices have been connected through Haier’s hOn app to assist with monitoring and energy management.
The two-storey Close to Zero Energy Home, which has been in construction for a year, has been designed to reduce energy consumption to almost nothing, with the home using advanced insulation, solar panels and energy storage solutions to significantly reduce energy demands.
Antony Peart, Director of Brand and Communications at Haier Europe, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to provide the appliances for this home that has so much potential to help consumers with the cost of living. It is fantastic to be able to support a project of this kind that reflects our own mission to reduce our impact on the planet.”
Among the appliances installed is Haier’s air-to-water heat pump, which includes a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of over 5, meaning it can produce over five times the amount of heat energy from each kilowatt of electricity consumed. The system is linked with Haier’s 10kW battery and solar PV solution, with all technologies projected to reduce household energy costs by over 80%.Steve Macdonald, Business Director at Haier UK & Ireland, said: “Our aim is to make energy savings of this scale achievable for everyday households. By integrating these appliances and smart management systems, we’re able to showcase a practical way forward for sustainable, low-cost living.
”In addition to the appliances, the hOn app integrates a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) which enables scenario planning, meaning all appliances can automatically run during optimal times, including when solar power is abundant.
The zero-energy home initiative is a part of Haier’s broader commitment to sustainability, with the company also receiving the 2023 Terra Carta Seal for climate-positive efforts. Haier’s energy-efficient homes, including a prototype unveiled in Liverpool, aim to serve as models for future UK housing and increase the potential for zero-cost energy living.
