Tumble dryer sales restrictions to come into force in 2027

From 19 January 2027, new vented, condenser and gas-fired tumble dryers will no longer be allowed onto the Great Britain market, as the new minimum Energy Efficiency Index of less than 85 is expected to effectively phase out these less efficient technologies.

Heat pump tumble dryers that meet the new requirements will remain available, with the regulations designed to encourage more energy-efficient appliances and reduce energy use and consumer bills.

The changes have been described as a “tumble dryer ban”, but existing owners will not be required to replace conventional machines and can continue using, repairing and maintaining them for as long as they remain functional.

Second-hand sales of existing vented and condenser machines will also remain permitted, meaning the restrictions apply to the sale of new appliances rather than ownership or use.

The government has also introduced measures intended to improve the durability and repairability of tumble dryers, including requirements around spare-parts availability and a new repairability index on energy labels.

The regulations also raise the minimum condensation efficiency requirement for relevant dryers from 70% to 80%, while imposing tighter limits on energy consumption in off and standby modes.

The government consulted on the changes between July and August 2025, receiving 12 responses from manufacturers, retailers, trade associations, academics and consumers, with broad support for the proposed technical requirements and policy direction.

For retailers, conventional models can continue to be sold during the transition period, but from 19 January 2027 new stock will need to meet the new standards, making heat pump technology the dominant option in the new appliance market.
