Campaign calls for 90 minutes’ free parking on England’s high streets

A Parliamentary petition calling for a national minimum of 90 minutes’ free parking in town and city centres across England has gained momentum, with retailers and consumers being encouraged to support the campaign.

The petition, created by Emma Hussain, calls for a change in the law requiring all local authorities in England to provide at least 90 minutes’ free parking in town and city centres to support high street businesses and local economies.

Research from the fairs’ Voices of Retail campaign found that 63% of consumers say free parking would encourage them to visit their local high street more often, while 38% of independent retailers said it would have the biggest positive impact on their business.

The campaign has already received coverage from Good Morning Britain, GB News, the Evening Standard, The Independent and more than 10 regional newspapers, while organisers have also contacted local MPs to build support.

The campaign is aiming to reach 100,000 signatures by 23 January 2027, the petition’s closing date, which would mean it is considered for debate in Parliament.

The petition has already passed the 5,000-signature mark, while 10,000 signatures would trigger a Government response and 100,000 would lead to consideration for a parliamentary debate.

Retailers can support the campaign by signing the petition, sharing it with customers, including it in social media posts, and encouraging their networks to get involved.
