A charity which supports children and young people in Norfolk and Suffolk has received a major boost following the efforts of seven cyclists from Retra member, Hughes Electrical.

The Benjamin Foundation has been presented with nearly £16,000 thanks to the endeavours of the magnificent seven, who rode 450 miles in just five days to raise the money.

The ride was the brainchild of serial fundraiser Nigel Jeavons, a senior salesperson with Hughes Electrical in Hunstanton, Norfolk.

The challenge was to visit Hughes’ most northerly, westerly, southerly and easterly branches in five days, with a target of raising £5,000.

It started in Preston, most northerly/westerly before heading to Rayleigh, furthest south, then finishing in Lowestoft. The cyclists climbed a total of 25,770 feet.

“Tackling the 450 miles was not without its challenges, particularly when we rode across the Peak District with some pretty intimidating hills, but we knew it was all for a good cause, so we just had to keep going,” said Mr Jeavons. He added: “Of course, we are thrilled at smashing our original fundraising target and knowing the money will be put to very good use.”

Said Kirsty Pitcher, CEO of The Benjamin Foundation: “The incredible fundraising by the Hughes team will help us to provide more emotional wellbeing and mental health support for young people across all of our services, including in our supported accommodation settings.

“It can also help to provide more training for staff in mental health and support the growth of wellbeing champions across our services, provide much-needed resources and help to reduce social isolation too.

“Fundraising by individuals and businesses is so important and we are extremely grateful to Hughes Electrical staff for their fantastic effort, which will do much to support children and young people in Norfolk and Suffolk.”

The Benjamin Foundation was founded in 1994 and helps over 2,000 young people annually who are experiencing challenges in their lives, including young carers and those who may be at risk of homelessness.
